Breast cancer

It is the most common tumor among women in Brazil. Each case has its own characteristics, and the plan is built taking into account the tumor type, the stage of the disease, the molecular profile and the clinical condition of each person.

i
Care that considers the whole person Diagnosis, test results, preferences and clinical context all take part in defining the next steps.
When to seek evaluation

Signs that deserve attention

Noticing a change does not mean having cancer, but it is important to look into it.

Lump or thickening

In the breast or in the underarm area.

Change in shape

Changes in the size or in the skin of the breast.

Change in the nipple

Retraction, change or unexpected discharge.

Nipple discharge

Especially when it occurs in only one breast.

Skin changes

Redness, flaking or a different appearance.

These signs can have different causes. Investigation makes it possible to clarify the cause and define the appropriate course of action.
How the evaluation works

From the first assessment to the next steps

1

Consultation and physical examination

Personal and family history, and assessment of symptoms.

2

Review of test results

Imaging, reports and results already available, including pathology, immunohistochemistry and, in selected cases, molecular testing.

3

Defining the plan of care

Guidance on investigation, treatment or follow-up, in coordination with the multidisciplinary team.

Area of expertise

Gynecologic cancers

They comprise diseases with different origins, behaviors and treatments. Understanding these characteristics is central to defining an individualized plan of care.

Cancers treated

Information to recognize and investigate

Ovary

Persistent abdominal bloating, early satiety or pelvic pain warrant evaluation.

Endometrium

The most common sign is unexpected bleeding, especially after menopause.

Cervix

Bleeding after intercourse or unusual discharge should be investigated.

Vulva

Sores that do not heal, persistent itching or changes in color warrant evaluation.

Vagina

It may present as unexpected bleeding or discomfort during intercourse.

i
Persistent gynecologic symptoms can have different causes. An individual evaluation helps to understand what is happening and what next steps may be needed.
Also part of the care

Molecular profile and family history

Two fronts that help guide decisions and broaden the view of the family.

Genetic risk assessment

Family history and alterations such as those in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes may indicate the need for genetic counseling and for a differentiated follow-up.

Precision medicine

Molecular testing reveals biological characteristics of the tumor that help estimate the risk of recurrence and guide the choice among the available therapies.

Second opinion

Review of the diagnosis and of the treatment plan already proposed, to support decisions with more clarity and confidence.

Frequently asked questions

Information to arrive feeling more confident

If your question is not here, the assistant can help via WhatsApp.

Do I need a confirmed diagnosis to book an appointment?

No. The consultation can take place during the investigation, to guide which steps make sense next.

If you already have test results, bring the reports and the images, even if there is no conclusion yet.

Which tests should I bring to the consultation?

Reports and images from the tests performed, biopsy and immunohistochemistry results, molecular tests if any, medical reports and the list of medications in use.

If there is a family history of cancer, it helps to note which relatives, which cancers and at what age they were diagnosed.

When should you see a clinical oncologist?

When there is a confirmed cancer diagnosis, when there is a suspicion under investigation, or when you want to review a treatment plan that has already been proposed.

Clinical oncology handles drug treatments, known as systemic therapies, and follow-up over time. Surgery and radiation therapy are carried out by their own specialists, in an integrated way.

Do I need a referral?

It is not required. Many patients are referred by their gynecologist, breast specialist or surgeon, but you can also book directly.

Can I ask for a second opinion if I am already in treatment?

Yes. Seeking a second opinion does not interrupt your ongoing care and does not imply distrust of the team looking after you.

Does a family history of cancer mean I will develop the disease?

No. Family history is one of several factors considered in risk assessment. Most cancer cases do not result from inherited alterations.

In specific situations, genetic counseling helps clarify risk and define appropriate follow-up.

Where do consultations take place?

At Hospital Samaritano Higienópolis and Hospital Leforte Liberdade, both in São Paulo. Appointments for both locations are handled by the assistant.

Which insurance plans are accepted?

The assistant will let you know which insurance plans are accepted at each location and provide guidance on authorizations and required documents.
